Mark Alenius to Represent CWLL and Canada at the 2023 Little League World Series

Each year, only one umpire in Canada is selected to participate at the LLWS in Williamsport, PA.

Being selected is a prestigious honour, acknowledging exceptional skills, professionalism, and contributions to the sport.

Mark Alenius's commitment to umpiring baseball is deeply intertwined with his love for the sport and his family. Baseball has not only provided him with a platform to showcase his expertise, but it has also allowed him to spend quality time with his three sons, Derek, Kevin, and Stephen. Mark's infectious excitement for the game has inspired not only his family but also those around him.

Mark's involvement with Calgary West Little League (CWLL) has been extensive. Beginning in 1996, he coached each of his sons at every level of baseball within CWLL. A core principle in his life, development, was intertwined with his love of baseball to the benefit of his sons and all the players he coached. In 2001, he joined the league as the Vice President of Development, dedicating five years to enhancing the skills and knowledge of players, coaches, and umpires.

During this time, Mark began umpiring sporadically to address the shortage of umpires. However, in 2008, he and his sons were convinced by the CWLL Umpire-in-Chief, Rob Wilkinson, to become more involved in umpiring. Mark's core principle of development continued to guide him as he sought to improve his role on the field. His dedication led him to become a lifelong student of the game, constantly expanding his knowledge of rules, plays, and positions.

Mark's expertise and passion for development extended beyond the field. He initiated annual teaching clinics for CWLL and District 8 umpires, sharing his knowledge and elevating the standard of officiating. His extensive knowledge and adherence to the rules have earned him the reputation of being the best "rule-based" umpire among local umpires.

Throughout his coaching and umpiring journey, Mark's wife, Barb, has been a constant pillar of support, encouraging and standing by him. Quite often you can see Barb at many of Mark or Kevin’s games, watching her boys’ umpire.

As a true fan of the sport, Mark has given back more than anyone could have asked for as a volunteer. His dedication and skill have been recognized on a broader scale. He has represented CWLL and District 8 as an umpire in several championships, including eight Canadian Regional championships. In 2014, he had the honour of being the Canadian Umpire at the Intermediate Little League World Series. Now, it is with great pride that we announce Mark’s prestigious selection as Canada’s umpire representative at the 2023 Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

Mark Alenius's commitment to umpiring baseball is not merely a role; it is a testament to his love for the sport, his family, and the value he places on development. His impact on the game and the community is immeasurable, and he continues to inspire and elevate those around him.
